 | | | | | | ©2006 Kwon W.S. | | Today we are proud to open the program of the 2nd OhmyNews International Citizen Reporters' Forum for our readers and media around the world.
We tried hard until the last minute to construct a program that will address the most pressing issues facing the practitioners of citizen journalism the world over. In the forum, participants will tackle a variety of issues in citizen journalism, ranging from technology, editorial balance, and managerial challenges to globalization of the citizen journalism model that was pioneered by Oh, Yeon-ho six years ago in South Korea.
The forum starts its three-day program on July 12, to be attended by over sixty citizen reporters and leading figures of global citizen journalism, including Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, Dan Gillmor, J.D. Lasica of Ourmedia.org, Tim Lord of Slashdot.org, Susan DeFife of Backfence.com, Ethan Zuckerman of Globalvoices and other distinguished speakers.
This year we will also meet two newcomers in citizen journalism from Europe and the Middle East; Erik Larsen of Flix.dk in Denmark and Michael Weiss of Scoop.co.il in Israel. They will share with our guests their lessons learned in the first year of their newsroom management.
To spread our message and excitement about citizen journalism we are going one step further this year. We are extending invitations not only to citizen reporters at OhmyNews but to those who contribute stories to other citizen journalism sites around the world as well.
The additional invitees will be selected through an open contest at their corresponding news sites. By embracing citizen reporters who are active outside the OhmyNews arena, we intend to make this forum a truly inclusive festival of global citizen reporters.
The forum is open to everyone interested in the future of citizen journalism. We are confident that members of international press, media practitioners and students of journalism the world over will have a rare chance to track the latest trends in citizen journalism. Register for the forum now to have a first-hand look at the future of citizen journalism in Seoul.
Building upon the success of last year, the new media practitioners and global citizen reporters will try to identify the best practices forward in this still-fledgling field.
We hope our speakers, citizen reporters, and participants can return to their newsrooms with valuable insight and renewed confidence gained at the forum.
