It has been three months since the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) declared a formal ceasefire, ending its armed hostilities against the government.

Yesterday on July 17 it announced an armed war against its breakaway faction -- the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM), fearing violence in the Terai zone of Nepal.

The JTMM is an armed faction led by former Maoist leader Jay Krishna Goit. It split from the Maoists two years ago. Goit formed the group after accusing Maoists of not committing to autonomy for the Terai region.

At a July 17 press conference at Rajbiraj, a city in eastern Nepal, Matrika Prasad Yadav, central member of the CPN-Maoists and chairman of the Madheshi People's Rights Front, said.

"We were compelled to announce a war against the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha as its activists continued killing our cadres."

Yadav claimed that "royal elements" and India were backing the group and that therefore, "the JTMM's policy is against the Madheshis."

"We called the Morcha's leaders for talks but they paid no interest and continued to kill our cadres. The war will continue until the coordinator of the Morcha, Jay Krishna Goit comes to the table of talks by realizing the mistake," he added.

The Maoists accuse JTMM activists of the murder of two Maoist cadres, Mahendra Yadav and Bijay Jha, in Chhinnamasta of Saptari some two weeks ago.
