For the first time a South American city will host the Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro, on the seaside of Brazil had to beat Madrid (Spain), Chicago (US) and Tokyo (Japan) to receive the 2016 Olympics.

There was much commotion and anxiety in Brazil this Friday, day of the announcement of the host city. While the president Luis Inacio “Lula” da Silva, Pele, and other politicians and athletes were in Copenhagen, Denmark, to take part in the polling and in the presentations of the Olympic projects, that would decide the host city. In Copacabana beach more than 5 thousand Brazilians were on the expectation to see if Rio de Janeiro would be chosen to receive the Olympics.

All worries were on Chicago, especially due to the of the presence of Barack Obama in Copenhagen, and other celebrities as Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey. But in the very first round, Chicago was eliminated. The second city to be eliminated of the polling was Tokyo and at the announcement time, only Madrid and Rio de Janeiro remained.

When the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened the envelope with the five Olympic rings and said that Rio de Janeiro was to be the host of the 2016 Olympic Games, there were two explosions of happiness. One at Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, where a big party began with music and more than 5 thousand people hugging, dancing and celebrating Rio’s victory; the other in Copenhagen, where they also spread a bream with the words "Rio Loves You" and other one at Bella Center. The whole Brazilian delegation jumped off their chairs and started celebrating. The president Luis Inacio “Lula” da Silva started crying as also did the king of soccer, Pele.

Lula said that it was impossible to avoid the tears.

"It's a dream that we are dreaming for several years," the president said. "We worked hard to make it to this point and it’s the greatest sensation ever to see the success of the project Rio 2016, if I die tomorrow, I'll certainly die satisfied."

For the president, the tears made Rio de Janeiro the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.

"Our tears were decisive," he said. "Our project had soul; had emotion; we really wanted to host the Olympic Games very hard, more than anyone else."

Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, two of the greatest events in the world of sport. Now the country must prepare the structures to receive such an important event.
