Myanmar's military government may soon release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi so she can play a role in next year's general elections, a senior Myanmar diplomat, Mr Min Lwin, a director-general in the Foreign Ministry confirmed.
No time frame was offered, and no moves to release her have yet been made.

| She has been detained for 14 of the past 20 years. She was recently sentenced to an additional 18 months of house arrest for briefly sheltering an uninvited American.
Her party, the National League for Democracy, has not yet decided whether to take part in the polls. The party says the elections would be held under the auspices of a Constitution established last year by undemocratic means.
The Constitution includes provisions that bar her from holding office and ensure the military a controlling stake in the government.
