Race Is On to Find Pirate Treasure

A few weeks ago, Chilean engineer Manuel Salinas was hailed as a genius after claiming that his robot "Arturito" found the mythical pirate treasure said to be buried in Robinson Crusoe Island, 670 kilometers west of Chile.

But Thursday morning he faced an embarrassing situation during a debate at the Federico Santa Maria University of Valparaiso, Chile's top technology college. Salinas was invited by the head of the Physics Department. The auditorium was packed with students that grilled Salinas about how his robot functioned.

He did not show up with his invention or documents to back up his claims that "Arturito" can find objects more than 50 meters underwater. Salinas started rambling about "gamma rays," "zero atmosphere" and could not give an understandable explanation. This caused many students to laugh.

This prompted the moderator to go on stage and interrupt Salinas by saying, "After listening to this lecture all I can say to the student body is that they should not believe a word this man is saying. This university has a reputation to maintain."

Salinas got up immediately and left the premises.

"I don't care if I am ridiculed, I will stick to my ideals," said Salinas.

Meanwhile, Chicago millionaire Bernard Keiser continues his 10-year quest to unearth the treasure and will be digging until March 2006.

Wagner Technologies has asked for an official permit to begin work at the site where they claim their robot "Arturito" has found more than 800 tons of gold.
