As the year ends, so do the local football championships. A penalty shootout decided that Universidad Catolica (also known as the U.C.) will be the 2005 champion in Chile.

During the first match U.C. defeated its archrival Universidad de Chile 1-0, but on Dec. 22 the team led by Marcelo Salas, formerly of Juventus in Italy, fought back and won the second match 2-1.

In front of 60,000 fans in Santiago's national stadium, the U.C. won the shootout by 5-4. Some frustrated Universidad de Chile fans waited for the rivals to leave the stadium and fought a pitched battle in the neighboring streets. One fan was severely burnt after a firework exploded in his face.

In the rest of South America the champions were:
Argentina: Boca Juniors

Brazil: Corinthians

Colombia: Deportivo Cali

Ecuador: El Nacional

Peru: Sporting Cristal
