No one anticipated this. First led by teenage girls, the candlelight vigils developed into a full-swing movement that engulfed the whole of Korean society. That is why everybody is anxious for accurate, in-depth analysis and compelling prediction of the future. We are looking for answers about how this came about and where it will lead us.

The two-month long rally that could be called "Candlelight 2008" is unique to Korea. During this 4th OhmyNews Forum, we aim to highlight this new media phenomenon.

The forum will first try to analyze "Candlelight 2008" and its impact on the shift of media leadership in Korea. Over the past two months we have seen a completely new phenomenon emerging in local media -- Korean online communities led by Daum Agora played an essential role in shaping public opinion and Internet Webcasting was noted as an alternative news outlet in its capacity to broadcast live events in their entirety, bypassing conventional editorial screening processes. Blogs and other personal media played a bigger part in these protests, while traditional media was heavily criticized for their failure to convey people's voices.

Many questions stem from whether this shift in the media landscape is temporary or whether it is here to stay, heralding a fundamental change in media leadership. As more and more citizens participate in the shaping of public opinion, will we end up with a better collective wisdom? If so, what will happen in five years time if the same things happen again?

Prominent names in local media, such as Daum, Afreeca.com, OhmyTV, bloggers, Prof. Jin Joong-kwon and Kyunghyang Shinmun, who played an essential role in "Candlelight 2008" will participate the 10-hour long intensive discussion. Howard Rheingold and other leading new media pundits will also attend this 4th OhmyNews forum.

To share this Korea-specific phenomenon with a global audience, the entire forum program will be Webcast live via OhmyTV video stream. Netizens both within Korea and abroad can participate in the discussion. I hope you will tune-in and participate.

Thank you.
