Anticipation Grows for Americas Summit
Security, farm subsidies and protests against visiting U.S. President arouse concern

Many people in the Argentinean city of Mar del Plata have decided to leave next week for fear of attacks or incidents that might take place during the meeting of the Fourth Summit of the Americas on Nov. 4-5.

The entire city will be shut down for the summit: city workers will not work, there will be no classes in the schools, and all the banks will be closed to the public.

At the same time, a Summit of the People will convene. The organizers announced plans to hold a massive demonstration against the presence of American president, George Bush, and there is concern about possible clashes with security agents.

Most banks have reinforced their security to prevent small attacks like those that have occurred in Buenos Aires over the past weeks. Some American companies also plan to close their doors during the event.

More than 50,000 neighbors and retailers will be registered to operate in the zone where the American president will lodge.

Plans have begun to pick up around the summit this week, with the arrival of airplanes transferring North American security personnel and the food of President Bush, including two helicopters.

Meanwhile, and in spite of the protests from the Argentine government, Great Britain's Foreign Office continues warning its citizens traveling to the country about a "global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners."

While the tension grows, political preoccupation is centered on disagreements concerning farming subsidies and the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) between the United States and Latin American nations.
