As the evidence against Dr. Hwang Woo Suk's claims to have cloned human embryos, I was rather taken aback by the U.S. media and American people's tone on this matter. I've read numerous reporting where the U.S. media attributes this whole incident to Korea's Confucian society or Korean people's inherent follow-the-leader mentality.

I've heard and read numerous comments by ordinary Americans where they generalize about Koreans as corrupt, blindly following their superiors, etc.

I wonder where these same Americans were when the leaders of Enron and Global Crossing were defrauding them.

I suppose the U.S. media and American public have already forgotten about the whole invading Iraq under false pretense incident and Abu Ghraib torture scandal where the media and the public blindly believed and followed the leaders of this country.

If I were to publicly state that we can attribute America's propensity to be easily corrupted and fooled to the U.S. Christian background or generalize about white and black Americans as Kool-Aid drinking, gun-toting, violent people, I would be called a bigot, a racist and derided by the rest of Americans as ignorant.

Yet apparently it's OK for the U.S. media and many Americans to just generalize Koreans and Americans of Korean descent into a certain mold. As Martin Luther King day approaches, I am rudely awaken to the fact that America still has a long way to go until Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech comes to fruition.
