This August, in the Amazon International Show (FIAM: Feira Internacional da Amazonia), Brazilian and foreign investors were able to access business opportunities provided by the economic potential of Manaus, capital city of the state of Amazonas in Brazil.
FIAM, in its third edition now, is supported by the Brazilian government and carried through by the Manaus Free Trade Zone Department (SUFRAMA: Superintendencia da Zona Franca de Manaus). It promotes the economic potential of the region, its products both industrialized and regional -- made with local raw materials -- and (why not?) the already attractive tourism.
The show aims at sustainable development, contributes to stimulate commerce and culture, and welcomes scientific and technological interchange.
The outcome surpassed the expectations of the organizers and exceeded the US$5 million mark in trade they were expecting, reaching more than $10 million. Many of the 242 entrepreneurs, including 12 from North America, Europe, and Asia, had arrived in Manaus with a list of potential opportunities. During the business rounds they were able to triple their contacts.
Among the already known products -- electronics, pharmaceuticals, herbal products, cosmetics made with Amazonian essences, and garments for women made out of forest seeds and other materials -- were some products that are extending their share of the market in Brazil and in the world. For example, Green World, which specializes in natural foods, closed deals worth $500,000 for banana flour products. Powdered guarana figured high among other regional fruits for health care products sold during the event.
According to new studies promoted by SUFRAMA, industrial activity in Manaus will continue to grow. Organizers believe next year's show will be even bigger, and for good reason -- many exhibitors have already made reservations to participate in 2007.
