In July 2007, this writer suggested that the fragment of the MST-13 timer linking the bombing of Pan Am 103 to Libya had been fabricated and planted at the crime scene to implicate the regime of Colonel Gaddafi.

On Oct. 29 of this year I wrote: "In the Megrahi's case, Dr Hayes did not even perform the basic test which would have established the presence of explosive residue on the sample. During the trial, he maintained that the fragment was too small while it is factually established that his laboratory has performed such test on smaller samples."

"Had he performed such test, no residue would have been found. As noted by MeBo engineer U. Lumpert, the fragment shown at the Zeist trial belongs to a timer that was never connected to a relay. In other words, that timer never triggered a bomb."

The Mail on Sunday is reporting that: "New forensic analysis on a fragment of the timing device alleged to have triggered the bomb that brought down Pan Am jet 103 on Dec. 21, 1988, is said to have found no trace of explosive residue."

The only piece of forensic evidence in the chain that pointed to Libyan guilt has never been near the seat of an explosion, a source close to the investigation said last night.

Megrahi's legal team says the new information supports claims the timer was planted by investigators in a politically-motivated attempt to incriminate Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi.

"The overturning of Megrahi's conviction could revive the bombing investigators' original theory, widely believed by many of those close to the case, that Lockerbie was not a Libyan plot at all, but was, rather, carried out by Ahmed Jibril's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, on behalf of Iran," says the Jerusalem Post.
