Oh was born in 1964 in Gokseong, a peaceful riverside town located in the southern part of South Korea. He graduated from Yonsei University in Korean literature in 1988.

Fresh out of school, he joined Mahl, a liberal Korean monthly magazine, as a staff reporter. He continued his work in Mahl until 1999 as a chief of staff. During March 1995 through October 1997, he stayed in the United States as Mahl셲 correspondent in Washington, D.C.

Oh has published a number of independent books and collections of his experience in journalism in South Korea for the past 10 years. His latest book, OhmyNews Story, talks about his personal journey for the past five years in launching OhmyNews and earning an international recognition for his unique citizen reporter concept.

Six years before AP correspondents were awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their report on the No Gun Ri massacre by American soldiers during the Korean War, Oh conducted comprehensive interviews with the survivors and reported the in-depth story for Mahl.

Oh launched his long-dreamed media experiment in February 2000 and named it OhmyNews. OhmyNews has since rapidly grown to boast nearly 60,000 쐁itizen reporters worldwide and 65 full-time staff reporters as of June 2007. It was named by the annual Sisa Journal survey in 2000 as the 10th most influential media in Korea, a record to be broken each year by its being ranked as the 6th most influential media by the same survey in 2004 and 2005.

Oh earned a doctoral degree in journalism from Sogang University in 2005. He currently lives in Seoul with his wife and two children.
